Saint Chinian wine

st_chinian_wineAt the foot of the Montagne-Noire (Black Mountains) and covering the picturesque Orb valley, the Saint Chinian wine appellation was formed in 1982 to group together the wine production from twenty Languedoc villages. Centered around the town of Saint Chinian, this Southern France wine appellation has quickly gained a reputation for producing high quality fruity, full-bodied red wines. St Chinain wines tend to be made from a blend of Carignan, Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre and Cinsault grapes. The Saint Chinian vineyards are usually laid out on the Eastern side of the hills facing the sea (the so-called 'coteaux' arrangement).

Saint Chinian wines with healing powers!

Indeed, it is not only the taste of St Chinian wines that has created such demand. In Paris during the 14th century, St Chinian wines were prescribed in hospitals for their "healing powers" !! Although some rose wine is produced in Saint Chinian, red wine is the most popular.

Best Saint Chinian wines

Good Saint Chinian wines to look out for include wines produced by Mas Champart, Clos Bagatelle and the wines of Roquebrun - a picturesque village on the side of the River Orb.
