The Minervois wine region produces some outstanding Red, Rose and French White wines. Situated within a triangle formed by the three towns of Carcassonne, Narbonne and Beziers, the Minervois vineyards spread from terrace to terrace over 45000 acres, 12500 of which are in production. The Minervois wine region is also home to the Domus Maximus wine, a Minervois wine that was voted the 'best wine in the world' by Wine critics.
Grape varieties Minervois wine region
The predominant grapes for the Minervois red wines and Rose wines tend to be Carignan, Syrah, Cinsault, Grenache and Mourvedre. The Mourvedre and Syrah grapes bring an aromatic complexity and finesse to the Carignan, Cinsault and Grenache grapes in the blend. There are many white grape varieties planted in the Minervois wine region: Marsanne, Roussanne, Maccabeu, Bourboulenc, Rolle, Clairette and Muscat.
The range of Minervois wines, Languedoc
The eastern part of the Minervois wine region produces some excellent French red wines, usually characterised by a fine blackcurrant flavour. The central part of the Minervois wine region produces Languedoc wines that are distinguished and supple. This part of Minervois wine region also produces some excellent white wines - fresh and rich in floral aromas. In the western part of the Minervois wine region, the red wines are lively and aromatic. The white wines produced in this part of the Minervois region tend to be slightly drier. At Saint-Jean-de-Minervois the Muscat comes into its own. The celebrated Vin Doux Naturel is subtle and fruity sweeter white wine.
