The Faugeres wine appellation only consists of 2075 hectares of vines. This little Languedoc wine appellation was only created in 1982 but since this time Faugeres wines have built a reputation for consistent high quality. Typically, the Faugeres wines are full of ripe fruit and full-bodied. Faugeres predominantly produces red wines, but they also produce an excellent French rose wine and a very small quantity of white wine.
Faugeres wine region
The Faugeres wine region covers 7 villages high up in the hills above Beziers. The secret too the high quality Faugeres wine is in the terrain (or terroir as they call it in France). The Faugeres vineyards are laid out on steep hills surrounding the sleepy village of Faugeres. The hillsides are predominantly made from schist, which provides a unique soil drainage and moisture retention. Carignan is the traditional grape variety used in Faugeres wines. Grenache is also used to provide a strong alcoholic content, along with hints of fruit and spices. Finally, Mourvedre delivers high-quality tannins which guarantee a long life for the Faugeres wine. Most of the Faugeres wine produced is for local consumption with only11% of Faugeres wine exported outside of France
Best Faugeres wines, Languedoc
My prediction is that the Faugeres wines, little known outside of France, will become the next 'discovered wine'. My advice is therefore to buy now whilst the prices are such good value. Particular mention should be made to the Faugeres wines from Domaine Ollier Taillefer. This excellent local Faugeres wine producer uses a blend of 30% Syrah grapes, 40% Carignan, 20% Grenache and 10% Mourvèdre. The combination of these four grape varieties creates a complex, subtle and delicate wine, that neutralises the acidity of the soil.
