The vast majority of the Bordeaux wine produced (88%) is red. However, there are some excellent Bordeaux white wines, especially the sweet white Bordeaux wines from the Sauternes wine region such as Chateau d'Yquem. There are also some notable dry white Bordeaux wines, Bordeaux rosé and Bordeaux sparkling wines (Crémant de Bordeaux) all making up the remainder.
Bordeaux white wines
Bordeaux white wine is predominantly made from Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle grape varieties. Typical Bordeaux white wine blends are usually 80% Sémillon and 20% Sauvignon Blanc.
Dry white Bordeaux wines
Dry white Bordeaux wines are made throughout the region and the better versions tend to have a significant oak influence. The dry white Bordeaux wines from the Graves and Pessac-Léognan areas are the best examples of superior dry white Bordeaux wines.
Sweet white Bordeaux wines
The sweet white Bordeaux wines from Sauternes appellation, are some of the world's most famous sweet wines. These sweet white wines are made from Semillon, Savignon Blanc and Muscadelle grapes. Wines from Sauternes, especially the Premier Cru Supérieur estate Château d'Yquem, can be very expensive, due largely to the low yeilds and high productions costs.
Sauternes are characterized by the balance of sweet flavours (apricots, honey and peaches) with the zest of acidity. A good Sauternes wine will remain on the palate for several minutes. Sauternes wine can be paired with a variety of foods, with foie gras being the classic match.
